Unlikely: HPV is a family of viruses that has been around forever. Studies in college women before the vaccine showed as many as 70% had blood evidence of prior HPV infection. Although a few strains are associated with cervical cancer, it affects a fraction of those infected with these strains and can be picked up early through regular pap screening. It usually goes dormant but can reactivate.
