Corneal irritation: A symptom described as a "sratchy" feeling of the eyes, is generally referring to the a sense of sandy or gritty feeling one experiences when blinking the eyelids. The blinking action stimulates the corneal surface nerve endings that are irritated. The most common cause is related to ocular surface dryness, but other causes may include the presence of a foreign body, preservatives in eye drops.
