Exophthalmos: There are devices to measure the protrusion of the eye forward in its socket. There are established norms and if the eye is measured to be forward more than the norms, then by definition it is protruding. This can be seen in Graves thyroid disease, or conditions in which there are tumors or abnormal vascular growths behind the eye.
