Eye pressure: Normally the eye maintains an internal pressure which will be tolerated by the vessels and nerves at the back of the eye. Glaucoma occurs when the pressure is higher than this threshold and the retina loses function from this. Ophthalmologists test pressure, visual fields, corneal thickness and disc structure in this evaluation. You cannot feel the pressure elevation so testing is required.
