A member asked:

Is it dangerous to just suddenly stop taking topiramate without doctors supervision? i am on 100mg a day?

Taper off: Since sudden cessation could result in withdrawal seizures or headaches, best to slowly reduce your dose over 2-3 weeks. Although risk of problems are low, best to do correctly to be fully safe.

Supervision is best: Do not suddenly stop. Topiramate needs to be tapered slowly. Epileptic seizures can occur if suddenly stopped even if you have never had seizures. The usual tapering schedule is to reduce the dose every week by 25mg daily. Patients having significant withdrawal symptoms may need to taper slower:Reduce dose every two weeks by 25 mg.
