Depends on location: Hi! the real estate mantra "location, location, location" applies here. Sensory nerves come off of the spinal cord at each level of the spine and give sensation of specific areas ("dermatomes"). By looking at which area is numb, we can determine what level of the spine the problem is occurring at, and whether this level is also the level that is achy. Then CT or MRI of this part of the spine.
