Avulsion injury: As the initial inflammation and pain settles, we tend to get more vigorous with our daily activities. There is a likelihood that with the sprain, a ligament or tendon could have been partially torn and sometimes a bony fragment could have avulsed. Blood supply to these are poor, healing is often slow therefore adequate rehabilitation is needed. X Ray and Physiotherapy is recommended at this stage,

Need to see Ortho: Hi! sprains may seem minor, but some of them can be severe enough to require orthopedic procedures; also sometimes a small fracture is misdiagnosed as sprain. If you had improvement with non-weight-bearing rest, ice, NSAIDs but discomfort when returning to activity, you can try those therapies again for another 3 days but if the pain persists or returns, you should see an Orthopedist.
