X Ray: It is fair to say that if you thumb is dislocated or broken, you would have little or no movement in your thumb and significant swelling and pain. However the only way to confirm is by visiting your doctor to obtain a referral for X Rays

Might need X-ray: This is one of the main reasons doctors do X-rays, as sometimes an X-ray is the only way to tell for sure. However, if you have a sprain it will hurt mostly when you move it. If broken it may hurt quite a bit even when at rest. A broken thumb is also likely to be more swollen and may look bruised/ black and blue. Because our thumbs are so important if you have real concern please get an X-ray.
