Moderate sprain.: A grade 1 RCL sprain is mild & not associated with loss of the thumb MCP joint stability. A grade 2 sprain usually involves a lot of pain & swelling. There could be bruising around the thumb & possible laxity of the joint. A grade 3 sprain can be very painful, & there is complete disruption of the joint, leading to joint instability.
