See below: The best way is to be there for your loved one. Rehab facilities have very liberal visiting hours in general and the more you can be there the better. Rehab teams love to get families involved with the rehabilitation process as well.

Many possibilities: There are many possibilities. I'd start with making sure you have full range of motion at the hips - sometimes gentle and progressive stretching exercises can help. But you should get an evaluation from your doctor or an orthopedist of what is going on in your hips and knees.

Cartilage: Xray doesn't show cartilage damage. If knee pain is persistent despite normal x-ray then MRI should be done to explore other possible cause.

Depends on your hist: It all depends on your medical history. Your medical history (how this all developed, what medical issues you normally have, what medicines you take, lifestyle considerations), is what lets your doctor know what risk factors you have and allows him/her to narrow the list of possibilities down and come up with just a few possible diagnoses to choose from. Looking at the rash helps too.
