A member asked:

Why the number of leukocyte increase in pregnancy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Immune response: White blood cells are part of the body's defense system. They attack what is not supposed to be in a particular human's body like bacteria or cancer cells. Half of a fetus is from the father, resembling a transplant. Mom's immune system would reject the fetus, if it wouldnt' be modified in a way not to do that. Part of the process is an increase in the leucocyte numbers.
