Your choice: If a surgical procedure is planned, and your General Dentist feels competent to do the procedure, there's probably no problem. Do understand that a Specialist, an Oral Surgeon, has 3-5 years more training than your General Dentist, and does nothing other than surgery. Your choice.

Oral surgeon: Oral surgeons are specialists with several years of advanced training in surgical procedures. Many general dentists are trained in surgical, procedure and will do many surgical procedures. Your dentist will refer you to an appropriate specialist for procedures when needed . You can always request a referral if you feel more comfortable seeing an oral surgeon. Or you may call one.
