Black spots: Bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract causes black stools but usually more than just a few spots.Examples are peptic ulcer and gastritis. Iron supplements and peptobismol can cause black stools. A simple stool test in your physicians office can test for occult blood in the stool. See your MD as needed. In the meantime avoid spicey foods, alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.
