Time for the doctor: A person with "awful pain" or "awful swelling" needs to see her doctor to be diagnosed and treated. Having both awful things means a trip to the doctor's office now. If she has no primary care doctor to go to, she can go to the ER. The doctor can examine to see if this is a tooth abscess, a lymph node abscess, or something else.
