Pressure atrophy: One theory is that pressure too high for the back of the eye to withstand causes constriction of the blood flow with atrophy of the tissue (nerve fiber) supplied by that blood stream. They then atrophy and this is the basis for the thinning. Lowering the pressure below that threshold for damage prevents further blood vessel constriction and allows the remaining nerve fibers to stay healthy.
