Esophageal spasm: What you described is not uncommon, especially with cold water. It is generally transitory and does not have any lasting ill effects. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex.

Esophageal Spasm: Most likely your pain was due to esophageal spasm, which can be set off by cold liquids. If the problem is occurring more frequently, consider seeing a doctor, as there are medications which can help and you may need to be evaluated for a more serious condition called achalasia. Much less likely to be a heart or lung condition if the pain is unrelated to exertion and lasts less than a minute.
