Xanax: I would only take Xanax as it was prescribed specifically for you. Your doctor obviously knows you better and at age 79 will have a better ideas of your needs.

Alprazolam: The less you take, the better. Usually taken as needed every 4-6 h, most habit forming among benzodiazepines, notorious of destroying sleep architecture. Talk to your doc about goals when taking it and overall duration of treatment.
