Possibly viral: infection, such as infectious mono which is caused by the EB virus, and sometimes a CBC or serology testing is needed to confirm if mono spot is negative. Alternatively, many bacteria have become resistant to penicillin or other bacteria present in the throat and sinuses make it less effective, and an alternate antibiotic is indicated.
