It's a concern, but,: unless symptoms are bad, t's not an emergency. Bile produced by the liver is the primary pigment that makes stool dark brown. Absence of bile (this can be confirmed with a stool specimen) usually indicates a problem with the drainage system of the gall bladder, pancreas or liver. Blood tests may be normal.
