A member asked:

If you suffer from alcoholic hepatitis and stop drinking will the liver ever fully recover back to normal from this? and if so how long?

Alcoholic cirrhosis: No. The damage that has occurred to your liver is most likely permanent. But if you stop drinking, it will remain as it exists and not further spread to undamaged portions of your liver. Stop drinking permanently!

Alcoholic hepatitis : The liver is a very hardy organ. Having alcoholic hepatitis means the alcohol was causing some damage to the liver cells. If you stop drinking alcohol this should recover fully. However repeated drinking over time can lead to more permanent damage to the liver resulting in cirrhosis. This damage is not reversible. It is difficult to determine the extent of damage with blood work for this.
