LH, FSH,E,P: Periodic renewal of the uterine lining (endometrium) is controlled by the four hormones noted above. The most common cause of changes in menstrual flow (brown is older blood and used up endometrium, red is freshly lost blood) is changes in Estrogen or Progesterone, and all four hormones participate in the timing of menses.
