Mgt: A croupy cough in an otherwise normal child is usually due to a viral infection. The antibiotic will not treat a viral infection. Is there a specific bacterial cause identified? Your physician probably prescribed the antibiotic to cover possible bacterial causes of the pneumonia. Viruses may also cause pneumonia. Is there a fever? drooling? Does he appear ill? if so please see the ED.
