Define safe, painles: The MRI is generally safe and does not cause problems unless you have claustrophobia. The problems is the contrast (dye) which requires an IV site - & hence a needle venipuncture. The dyes used varies at different places, but (high-osmolar) contrast dyes with Gadolinium have been known to cause nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Ask the doctor ordering the MRI if dye HAS to be used, & for alternatives
