Yes: A tooth can be infected leading to necrosis or death of the nerve without demonstrating any symptoms. Eventually most cases will present symptoms. These are the most dangerous cases because you might not be aware of the condition that can lead to complications even death. Regular dental check ups are important and essential.

Infected teeth: Chronic infection usually do not present symptoms until they become acute. Symptoms vary greatly from an acute flare-up producing severe pain (and swelling) to longstanding chronic infections that may persist for years and years without symptoms. That is why routine dental x-rays are suggested along with regular check-ups. Better to find things early and treat easily with better prognosis.
