Mental status: These questions assess cognitive function, and the doctor wishes to make sure that your symptoms are not secondary to a dementia, such as Alzheimer's.

Mental status exam: This is a check to prove your basic cognitive function. Everybody who sees the psychiatrist gets asked this. Don't be insulted. I'm glad you're being seen by an expert -- the disorder that you describe is a cruel one that you must work with your physician to manage with insight and medication as appropriate. Sending you hope that your life will become better. Best wishes.

Mental state: These questions relate to the level of consciousness and the degree of mental distress. They are commonly asked after head injury. The answers will give a clue to alertness and brain injury. The questions are common things that all should be able to answer with normal mental capacity.

Mental status exam: Agree with the earlier responses. This tests memory as well as finding out how aware you are of your surrounding & the overall situation. It is part of a mental status exam.
