Please ask him: to join a Support group with counseling, as well as seeing a physician. There is no safe medication and motivation on his part will be the main therapy. He needs a strong will to get off alcohol and avoid situations that would make him drink. A healthy lifestyle with exercise and clean fun is best.

Naltrexone Campral: There are 2 medications approved for alcoholism. Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist that decreases cravings to drink as well take away the euphoric effects one gets when they drink. Campral works on the Glutamate in the brain which is involved symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and decreases cravings as well as anxiety which is trigger for many alcoholics. Together very effective meds with treatment
