What's going on in the brain when someone is dealing with drug/alcohol addiction for them to keep making excuses for doing it?

Drug addiction: Most drugs and alcohol directly or indirectly target specific centers in the brain resulting in pleasure. Dopamine is one of the chemicals produced at these centers. Overstimulating these centers with drugs or alcohol results in large amounts of dopamine and strongly reinforces the need for drugs and alcohol and the more. This teaches the brain to need more and more stimulation a vicious cycle
