Two types of herpes: HSV-1 is the type that usually occurs on the mouth or lips -perhaps you were kissed on your head? which would explain the somewhat unusual presentation of the infection. Genital herpes is HSV-2, a different virus, and is acquired sexually. Although there is some (minimal) cross-protection, the best thing to do is practice safe sex. That's barrier protection in this case! Herpes spreads by contact.
