I've started taking cold showers to help my alopecia, but is there any obvious ways to know if it has truely stopped?

Won't help: Someone is playing a cruel joke on you. Cold showers will not affect alopecia, whether it's male pattern baldness or due to illness. The best thing a balding man can do is shave his head, maybe grow some really nice facial fair, and get really physically fit. Absolutely nothing looks better.
