Checking for labor: In order to diagnose premature labor, there usually needs to be uterine contractions and progressive cervical change. In labor and delivery, we usually check the cervix soon after admission with contractions, then recheck after 1-2 hours to see if the contractions have resulted in dilation of the cervix or other changes. We also look for other causes for contactions, like a bladder infection.
