A member asked:

Can i suggest a certain chemo drug to my medical oncologist for consideration before the chemo session? or, does he have to stay with protocol?

Have an open talk: The choice of chemotherapy drugs is often variable among different oncologists. So it is good to ask the doctor all the choices and variations available and ask questions about what you have read or heard. A good oncologist will explain the pros and cons of different drugs. A second opinion from another oncologist is another useful exercise to explore other alternatives/questions!

Go ahead: Your oncologist often has a variety of choices. Since these drugs are so powerful and dangerous, he will have to stay within an accepted protocol. Many claims addressed directly to patients are misleading at best, cruelly false at worst. He will not mind your asking. If you're interested in getting into a study, all oncologists have ties to these cutting-edge workers.
