Reexamination: An xray may miss a hairline fracture. If pain is worsening or swelling develops, reevaluation is recommended for diagnosis. This may include a bone scan. A hairline fracture or bone contusion don't require surgery but explains the extent of the injury, how much pain and its expected duration. In the meantime apply ice and give her Tylenol (acetaminophen) and go back to the emergency room for quick attention.

Follow up: I would suggest a followup appointment. Some components of an injury do not show up on X-ray and may need further workup.
