Yes,to see if the: pt is worsening or getting better. The higher the lactate, the worse the pt is and that guides therapy ie what must be done for the pt to relieve sepsis

Lactic acid trend: A follow up lab test for lactate or lactic acid helps the doctor 'understand' how the process of sepsis is or isn't going... i.e, when the body is under severe stress with sepsis, lactic acid will be produced. Doctors like to see that this goes away with the proper treatment of sepsis. A high lactate is a bad sign, if that can be improved, we have a better idea of the prognosis. Hope that helps.
