A member asked:

If an elderly male pt is unable to freely produce a specimen for a urine culture but blood cultures are still taken notwithstanding that the pt has agitated delirium, would it be feasible to take a urine culture by other means? if so, how? quickly?

See below : Patient can be straight cath'ed by a healthcare professional (nurse, physician assistant, MD) to obtain a specimen. This is quite common.

Straight cath: The straight answer to your question, would be to do a straight catheterization to obtain the sample. However, this person is 85-years-old and I don't know his/her current status. I am not a fan of recommending catheters in older people with delirium unless strictly necessary.
