Yes it can: yes it can. Hydration and cough suppressants can control these symptoms. It's important to understand the cause of your cough for it's usually severe cough that is capable of causing muscle spasms

Severe coughing: may cause tightness or spasm of nearby muscles of the chest, ribs & windpipe. That said, if your cough is that bad, you need prompt medical care. Pertussis (whooping cough), airway foreign body, asthma & laryngospasm, among other conditions, can cause severe cough. Best wishes. Dr. Anne.

Coughing muscle spasms: Yes, usually is associated to severe cough and affects the muscles which are inserted at he edge of the ribs and the diaphragm. In some occasions may generate cramps.
