Muscle strain: You sound as if you may have strained the muscles between your ribs while coughing. The only remedy for this will be to rest the muscles by controlling the cough (use a preparation containing dextromethorphan) and using an anti-inflmmatory/analgesic to control the discomfort.

Musculoskeletal pain: You likely have musculoskeletal pain related to coughing. It will typically slowly be relieved once the coughing stops. In the meantime, Ibuprofen as well as heat to the area can lessen discomfort. If severity increases or it persists after the cough stops or the pain becomes constant, see your doctor asap!
