Does NOT: Oxygen deprivation in a developing brain results in HIE. Grade 1 is the mildest form. Your son may have some developmental, motor or cognitive delay, but this does not mean that he will have "mental illness". He is at risk for mental illness like the rest of society. Many children with mild HIE grow up to be very productive adult members of society (authors, speakers, prof etc). Be encouraged. :-)
