What kind?: If it is not dislocated, then splinting the thumb may do the job. However, it needs be adjusted if there is any non-alignment. An uncomplicated takes about 6 weeks to heal but you should really consult an orthopedist to avoid ending up with a malformed finger particularly the thumb. Better be safe than be sorry.

Be seen: You would certainly want to be seen and discuss directly with your doctor the specifics of your case. A fairly high percentage of fractures involving the thumb require surgery, including what is known as a Bennett's fracture. Whether surgery is needed or not, most fractures of the thumb take approximately 6-8 weeks to heal.
