Acid suppression?: There are many other acid-suppressive drugs available. Those in the PPI (Omeprazole etc) and H2 blocker (Pepcid AC etc) classes are readily available OTC and usually more effective than Carafate (sucralfate).

See answer: Carafate(sucralfate) has been used to heal peptic ulcers, heal and prevent esophagitis and prevent medication induced peptic ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors(PPI's) like Prilosec are more effective for these indications and are preferred. An alternative to Carafate for treatment and prevention of heartburn(caused by esophagitis) is Gaviscon, which forms a barrier to keep acid away from the mucosa
