Very well tolerated: Valacyclovir is one of the safest and best tolerated of all drugs. Side effects are very rare and many patients take it for many years with no problem at all. It has no effect on the immune system. But be aware it doesn't 100% prevent outbreaks, viral shedding, or transmission. You still need to inform partners and use condoms, unless with a partner who is aware and willing to take the risk.
