How long after taking half a dose of milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) can one attempt to eat food? i ask because i ended up taking the equivalent of a full dose yesterday evening and ended up having diarrhea 4 times over the next twelve or so hours.

NO SOLID FOOD: with diarrhea! Please follow a clear fluid diet diet as follows: NO SOLID FOODS FOR 48 HOURS Force fluids: 8-10 glasses/day: Electrolyte rich fluids- Gatorade, Powerade, Vitamin Water Protein rich fluids: broth bullion, consume. AVOID ALL CITRUS JUICES: orange, grapefruit, pineapple, cranberry etc. Avoid all aspirin, Advil, Aleve (naproxen) ( NSAIDS ). If not improving go to private physician or UC clinic.

Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide): Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) is an osmotic laxative and is used as an antacid Individual differ in how they react. It appears you are sensitive and if constipated may only need a teaspoon or less. If not constipated do no use it , use ranitidine or pepecid for acid .Usually you can eat along with it. Eating also induces a gastrocolic reflex with defecation. MOM can also lower potassium f/u/ w/ doc
