Common: It is very common for children to get hives with viral infections. Most important is making child comfortable with antihistamines like Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) Zyrtec or Allegra. If hives lasting longer than 6 weeks, this is considered chronic hives and usually a specific cause is not found. Please see allergist if hives persists despite child not having a viral infection and longer than 6 weeks
