Don't Panic: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a chemical in the blood which rises when inflammation is present. It is important because persistent inflammation can be a risk factor for blood vessel diseases including heart attack, etc. But because it can rise for many reasons, and then can fall again, I usually advise my patients not to worry, and we watch to see if it remains PERSISTENTLY elevated. Great question!
