A week or so: Usually cotinine will clear in 3-4 days, however to be sure of passing the test, abstain for at least one week. Once you get off tobacco, it would be very good to stay off it forever. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex.

48-72 hours: Nicotine is a very short-acting drug and is metabolized quickly, which is why people who smoke have a cigarette generally at least once every 45 minutes while awake. However, its metabolite cotinine lasts longer, and can be detected for about 2 days after quitting smoking. It depends to some extent on whether you are a half-pack/day or a 3-pack/day person, but 72 hours is usually maximum.
