Decreased immune: It's mainly due to reduced immune system that an elderly diabetic is more at risk when faced with infections. However, if this individual has controlled diabetes fairly well and is relatively active, risks are smaller.

Yes: Diabetes impairs your immune function, making it harder to fight infections. Be sure that you had both your Prevnar (pneumococcal vaccine) and Pneumovax shots, and a Flu shot every fall. Follow your doctors recommendations to control your blood sugars. Take steps to avoid contracting a respiratory infection - hand washing, etc.
