Could be many things: Very sore throats are often strep, but more often they are not. Most frequently they are still caused by viruses, from cold viruses like rhino virus or adenovirus, to viruses like EBV that causes mono. Other bacteria than strep can also infect throat, although these causes are uncommon. Best to get source/cause identified if sick for more than a couple of days or if pain severe.
