Attitude is key: Most of my patients on dialysis live very happy lives. Dialysis allows them to stay alive and healthy and gives them opportunities to experience life that they otherwise would have missed out on. Yes they have to either perform home dialysis every day or go to the kidney clinic 3 times a week but if they follow the recommendations of their treatment team they can have a fulfilling life.

Part-time job: Dialysis enables a patient, who would otherwise die, to continue enjoying life. Attention to early dialysis access placement, treatment of anemia, and diet/fluid compliance are all essential. The time involved with dialysis is the equivalent of a part-time job. Whether it is worth it is a deeply personal conversation the patient should have with the nephrologist.
