Soft tissue or not.: I'm not sure if you mean that the side of your foot is being pushed down or you are pushing down on the side of you foot, as with your finger doing the pushing. Either way, a history and clinical exam would be most useful. Both help isolate the exact location as well as the depth of the pain. X-rays may or may not be useful unless there is a history of trauma or an older stress fracture.
