There is no stage 5: Stage 4 is advanced cancer or metastatic cancer, meaning the cancer has spread to parts of the body farther away from where the cancer started. There are many different kinds of cancer, and each has a different outlook, so one would have to ask questions about individual types of cancer. If a person is in stage 4, and treatment is not working, then the cancer can keep growing and kill the patient.
