Varies: There are multie potential causes, I would not hesitate to be seen. Fungal infection, occult trauma, or a pressure phenomena are among the more common causes. An exam would likely reveal the most likely diagnosis.

Pesky little toes.: The little toe can be traumatized without you even knowing it. The position is such that cracking, thickness and color can have multiple reasons. Try taking a picture of the area and compare it to another in two weeks. If there is obvious change, then an evaluation would be in order.
